The Pittsburgh community is mourning the devastating death of Jeremy Shapira, who passed away on Tuesday, November 18, 2025. His loss has brought deep grief to his father, David Shapira, the respected Giant Eagle Chairman and CEO, and to a family long known for its leadership, philanthropy, and community involvement across Western Pennsylvania. Jeremy’s death marks an immeasurable loss for those who loved him and for many who were shaped by his compassion and service.
A funeral service honoring Jeremy’s life will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at Rodef Shalom Congregation, located at 4905 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh (Oakland), PA 15213. The family has confirmed that there will be no prior visitation, allowing the service itself to serve as the community’s collective moment of remembrance.
Jeremy is remembered as a devoted husband to David Gilinsky, a cherished son of David Shapira and the late Karen Shapira, and a loving stepson of Cynthia Shapira. His devotion also extended to his sisters, Laura Shapira Karet (Tom Karet) and Deborah Shapira (Barry Stern), along with his step-siblings, David Busis (Catherine Blauvelt) and Hillary Busis (Michael Palmieri). Jeremy’s presence filled family gatherings with connection and belonging, and those closest to him describe his warmth as both steady and unforgettable.
He was deeply loved by his nieces and nephews—Will, Charlie, and Alexa Karet, and Pearl, Kayla, and Matan Shapira-Stern—who knew him as an extraordinary uncle whose encouragement, humor, and creativity shaped countless memories. Jeremy also leaves behind uncles and aunts Daniel and Barbara Shapira, Ralph Shapira, Bonnie Sun, Edith Shapira and Mark Schmidhofer, and Robert and Andrea Adler, along with many cousins across the Shapira, Schmidhofer, and Adler families. Members of the extended Gilinsky family also mourn a loss that feels both personal and immeasurable.
Those who knew Jeremy describe him as someone who brought people together with ease. He had a rare gift for making every person feel valued, understood, and welcomed. His friends consistently speak of his generous spirit, sharp emotional insight, and genuine interest in the wellbeing of others. His life’s work in community service and human relations reflected his belief that empathy should lead action, and that kindness should be practiced in both private and public moments.
Jeremy’s legacy continues through the people he lifted and the communities he strengthened. His family believes that his life demonstrated what it means to serve with intention, love freely, and act with purpose. Though his absence is profound, his influence remains steady in the many lives he touched.
